An exclusive ring made from a beautiful specimen of moonstone wrapped in intricate weaves of oxidized 999 silver. The moonstone originates from Sri Lanka – a location where the most beautiful specimens are mined. This particular example is characterized by a pearlescent-silver glow with blue flashes. I made the ring entirely by hand using the labor-intensive wire wrapping technique.
Moonstone, a gemstone with an ethereal glow, has been cherished across various cultures for its mesmerizing beauty and supposed mystical properties. Known for its unique adularescence, a visual effect that creates a billowy light across the stone, moonstone has captivated jewelers and wearers alike. This effect resembles the moon’s soft glow, hence the name moonstone. Originating from places like Sri Lanka, India, Australia, and Madagascar, moonstone has a rich history that ties it to love, fertility, and spiritual journeying in lore and legend.
Historically, moonstone was revered in ancient civilizations. The Romans believed it was born from solidified rays of the moon, while in India, it’s traditionally considered a sacred and magical stone. In more recent history, moonstone became highly popular during the Art Nouveau period, with jewelers like René Lalique incorporating it into their intricate designs. This period marked the beginning of moonstone’s association with modern jewelry, making it a staple for its ethereal qualities and elegant appearance.
Moonstone jewelry, with its subtle yet captivating allure, has become increasingly popular in contemporary fashion. It’s celebrated not only for its beauty but also for its versatility, complementing both casual and formal wear. Moonstone rings, in particular, are sought after for their unique appearance, with each stone offering a one-of-a-kind look due to the stone’s inherent variances. These rings often become statement pieces, drawing attention with their serene luminescence and the depth of color seen within the stone.
An interesting fact about moonstone is its variety of colors, ranging from blue and peach to grey and white, each offering a different reflection and mood. The blue moonstone, with its clear, deep blue sheen, is particularly prized among collectors and jewelry enthusiasts. Additionally, moonstone is considered a birthstone for June, symbolizing longevity and growth, making moonstone rings a meaningful gift. The allure of moonstone jewelry, especially rings, lies in its ability to capture the enchanting essence of the moon, bringing a piece of celestial wonder to everyday life.
