Coral, a unique and organic gemstone, is formed by living marine polyps in tropical and subtropical oceans. Unlike most gemstones which are mined from the earth, coral grows in rocky sea beds, typically in dark environments either in the depths or in caves. The most valued coral is the noble or precious coral, Corallium rubrum, found primarily in the Mediterranean Sea, known for its vibrant red and pink colors. Coral has been used in jewelry making for thousands of years, with evidence of its use dating back to the ancient Egyptians and Greeks.

Historically, coral was believed to have protective properties, often worn as a talisman to ward off evil spirits and bad luck. In the Victorian era, coral jewelry became immensely popular, admired for its beauty and supposed healing properties. Coral necklaces, in particular, were a fashion statement, often seen as a symbol of status. The variety of colors in which coral occurs – from red to white, pink, and black – has made it a versatile material for jewelry designers.

Coral is also integral to many indigenous cultures, such as the Native Americans, who have used it for centuries in their jewelry and ritual items. In these cultures, coral is not just a decorative item but a sacred symbol, often associated with the life force and vitality. A coral pendant, often carved into intricate designs, holds significant meaning and is a prized possession. The deep cultural significance of coral in various societies around the world adds to its allure and value.

In recent years, however, the environmental impact of coral harvesting has become a topic of concern. Overharvesting and climate change have led to the depletion of many coral species, prompting many countries to regulate or ban coral harvesting to protect these fragile ecosystems. This has led to an increase in the use of sustainably sourced or faux coral in jewelry making. Despite these challenges, coral continues to be a sought-after material, revered for its natural beauty and historical significance, with coral jewelry pieces being cherished heirlooms and symbols of cultural heritage.
